Changing Attitudes Toward Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in the Criminal Justice System: A Historical Overview

After a long career following, working with and writing about persons with intellectual disabilities – especially those who confessed to murders, rapes, arsons and burglaries they did not commit, as well as those on death row – Perske will describe a broad panorama of changes.  He will report on the way it used to be, the way it is now, and the perplexities we must now face and solve.

Autism & Criminal Justice: Prepare to Work with an Increasing Population

"As an investigator and journalist I've played key roles in probes of organized crime, extremist gun running, and stolen property rings. I now know after two decades of first hand experiences as a parent of a young man with a cognitive disability that my son and millions of others with intellectual disabilities will present serious dilemmas with negative repercussions for professionals in the criminal justice system who lack training on how to recognize, respond well and make adjustments for  this population in field, investigative and criminal  justice settings."

10:45am Break
Participants will attend a workshop track designed for their specific profession.  Law enforcement officers, magistrates and others who are involved in the pre-trial phase will be grouped together, attorneys and judges will be grouped together, and community corrections, prison correctional officers and others involved following sentencing will be grouped together.  Sessions will include experts in human services and criminal justice.
