For many years, individuals with developmental and related disabilities were routinely placed in large institutions. Often, they did not receive the care and attention needed to help them reach their potential.

In an effort to provide an array of housing options as an alternative to large institutions, The Arc of North Carolina developed more than 220 residences throughout the state, operated by local organizations who serve more than 1,200 people.

The Arc continues to develop new and innovative housing options including self-determined, self-controlled housing opportunities across the state, for people with developmental and related cognitive disabilities. The Arc of North Carolina's Housing Development Services looks forward to partnering with local and regional disability advocates in providing an array of housing options... to meet each individual's ability to live independently in the community with appropriate in-home supports.

Best Practices for Self-Advocate Controlled-Housing

  1. "The Maryland Opening Doors - A Home of Your Own Project's Curriculum For Those Working With Individuals With Developmental Disabilities To Promote Self-Determined Housing Choices Including Home Ownership"

This Curriculum assists family members, support service providers and other self-advocate mentors and friends, to work with individuals, guiding them to understand independent-living choices, i.e. to choose to live in homes that are either self-rented or self-owned.

  2. "How To Be A Responsible Tenant - For Parents, Consumers, And Advocates of Persons With Mental Retardation and Other Developmental Disabilities"

This Tenant Manual was conceived as a tool to enable people with developmental or other related disabilities to understand the process of choosing and renting their own home before they actually do it. It is intended to be used as a workbook with explanations of commonly used rental housing terms, spaces to write preferences and observations when looking at potential rental property, and in conclusion, a game on the last 3 pages, that is fun and educational.
